Situation

As CIO of a healthcare SaaS for the US market, I owned an infrastructure that ran a large number of customer services. Deployment had to be repeatable, the setup had to account for HIPAA and GDPR, and cloud cost per service was too high.

What I did

  • Built a deployment API in Express and TypeScript that creates a service, its domain and SSL in one step
  • Moved services to Kubernetes on Azure (AKS) and standardized deploys with Helm charts and ArgoCD
  • Designed multi-region infrastructure with HIPAA and GDPR requirements in mind
  • Managed the infrastructure as code with Terraform, CI/CD on GitHub Actions
  • Set up monitoring with Grafana and Prometheus

Result

More than 500 global services ran the same way, and cloud cost dropped by more than 60%, from about $15 to $5 per service.

One API request creates a service, then Helm and ArgoCD deploy it to the right regional cluster.
